With the proliferation of high-definition personal video recorders, you need the judgment of the Three Wise Men to choose among them.
Essentially it comes down to three types: the subscription-based MySky HDi; the broadband-driven TiVo; and Panasonic’s Blu-ray recorder with twin FreeviewHD tuners.
The catch with the first two is you have to be a Sky or Telecom customer respectively, whereas the third option is fatally limited by an electronic programme guide (EPG) that won’t let you record more than a few hours ahead.
However, unlike the other two, there aren’t ongoing subscription or broadband costs with the DMR-BW850.

OPINION: The launch of TiVo, which will go on sale on Friday, is a little underwhelming.
Being able to pause and rewind “live” television and record programmes straight to a hard drive without having to fork out for a monthly Sky TV subscription may appeal. But you can do that already with a Zinwell FreeviewHD digital video recorder (DVR) now on sale at Noel Leeming for $699.
At $920, TiVo will let consumers wirelessly shift pictures and movies between computers and their TV screens for viewing. But the real drawcard of TiVo is the ability (for Telecom customers) to download content and services through its broadband connection.

Sky Television is forecasting that MySky HDi decoder and personal video recorder revenue will make the company stronger and more profitable in the years ahead.
And as the first real competition arrives for MySky next week in the form of TiVo, the pay television company insists it is not concerned the newcomer will hit its revenues.

With the impending arrival of TiVo in New Zealand doesn’t mean much now that Sky’s MySky service got its foot through the door first.
TiVo is a media device that combines digital terrestrial television with broadband content, service and games.
TV ads claim that TiVo is the “biggest revolution since the invention of television”. Do breakthroughs in science and technology or the social revolutions that have shaped our recent history not count?
